Sheridan P. Murphy, CFP® has nearly a decade of experience in the financial services industry. He holds FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 securities registrations and is licensed in life, health, and long-term care insurance. He earned his designation as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, a rigorous certification to obtain in the financial services industry.

To achieve a CFP® designation, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (in any discipline) from an accredited college or university, complete coursework on financial planning through a CFP Board Registered Program, pass the two-day exam which lasts for three hours each day, and complete either 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process or 4,000 hours of apprenticeship experience that meets additional requirements.

Biography

Sheridan decided to found his own company in 2020 in Ohio during the height of the pandemic, and recently rebranded the business after moving to Tampa, Florida. When setting up his business, Modern Wealth Methods, as an independent advisor representative, Sheridan had to choose an RIA (registered investment advisory) firm. With his typical entrepreneurial spirit and drive, instead of just joining one, he decided to help shape one. He is one of the 13 original founding partners of his RIA firm, United Advisor Group.

“Independence means freedom from any one particular financial institution, which helps the company in its efforts to be completely objective and focused on our clients’ best interests in terms of financial plans and recommendations. We also have access to a universe of strategies and products rather than just a limited list,” Sheridan says.

The biggest reason Sheridan decided to found his own business is because he wanted a more permanent relationship with his clients. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in business economics, Sheridan went to work for Fidelity Investments for several years. He loved the job, which involved speaking to clients who were physically located all across the nation, but the downside for him was that he rarely spoke to clients more than once.

“I decided to establish my own firm so that I could achieve my goal of long-term client relationships, which I craved during my time at Fidelity. With my own business, I can help not only my clients at this point in time, but also their children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren in the future,” he says. “The sense of helping and making a true difference is extremely valuable to me. My practice is built around close personal relationships, which I strongly believe for me is far less of a choice than a personality trait,” Sheridan says. “This is a career path I deeply enjoy and the deeply personal relationships and stories are a real treat to me. I believe this makes me different than other advisors.”

Being able to work with clients in all states is also important to Sheridan. He says, “I do not want to be pinned down to a geographical area as most in this profession are. I want to be nationwide. I want to innovate. I want to be the best I can be for the people I service. I seek to be as cost-effective as possible for my clients, like billing business owners in a way they can write off on their taxes whenever possible. The value is in the plan. Building a unique and all-encompassing plan holds tremendous value for clients and their families to reach their unique goals. Leading them on a tailored path and ensuring we are constantly making smart decisions together is how I feel I contribute to their success in the most impactful ways.”

Sheridan believes his career choice marries his passion for people, business, and economics. “I’m a student of history and originally chose history as my major before finally switching to business. History to me is simply learning from stories of the past. Similarly, I learn the stories of my clients, which I enjoy immensely, while guiding them to make smart decisions in the pursuit of a fulfilling financial journey.”

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, or CFP®, Sheridan offers a full suite of financial services tailored to each individual client’s needs. “I really enjoy being there when a client reaches their goals. Like walking into a client’s home when we successfully put a plan in place to save for that down payment. Having that celebratory drink once they have reached their retirement goal. Opening that 529 account when they started their family. Seeing that same kid go off to college. Truly enjoying those milestone moments is pivotal for me,” he says.

Sheridan grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and is a proud alumnus of Saint Xavier High School and Miami University’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business economics from Miami University in Ohio.

The proud uncle of four beautiful little girls, ages 1 through 5, Sheridan currently lives in Tampa, Florida. He still pursues his love of history in his free time, enjoying books, movies, podcasts, documentaries, and YouTube videos. He’s been a sports fan and participant his entire life, and while no longer involved in competitive sports, still exercises regularly and finds working out to be a cathartic experience. As a true Floridian now, he loves the beach and being outdoors.
